Pamphlets, articles, pictorial material, bibliographies, etc., concerning this Georgia poet and playwright, as available. A one-time friend and correspondent of Edgar Allen Poe, they apparently influenced each other's work. Chivers had the first collection of poetry published by a Georgian -- The Path of sorrow, or, The Lament of youth: a poem (printed in Franklin TN in 1832). He is considered one of the first European-American writers to seriously seek to record African-American language and speech rhythm.
